"Making Headlines"- Philadelphia's LGBT Community & the Media

In 1962, less than two years after Philadelphia’sfirst gay rights organization was formed, Greater Philadelphia Magazine became the country’s first mainstream publication to feature a story about a city’s gay community. “Making Headlines” examines the long and bumpy relationship between Philadelphia’s press and the city’s LGBTQ community, an evolving relationship that was sometimes exploitative and other times supportive, sometimes patronizing and other times respectful. Curated by the Center’s own Bob Skiba from the extensive newspaper collection at the John J. Wilcox, Jr. Archives.
