WELCOME!

A core base of over 250 active volunteers enables the small staff to plan and facilitate programs and services. The Center offers many ways to volunteer, so there's truly something for everyone. Whatever volunteer opportunity you choose, volunteering is a great way to meet new people, get involved, have fun, and, most importantly, make a difference in the community.

We are currently stewarding over 50 new volunteers through the orientation process at the Center and connecting them with volunteer opportunities. We are putting our new volunteer recruitment efforts on a BRIEF pause while we complete this process. We’ll be back up online in early April and hope you check back in with us then! Please do not hesitate to email us or call 215-732-2220 if you have questions or ideas!

Available opportunities

Tier 1: One-time or as-needed

A great way to get involved if you don't have a lot of time or a set schedule. We have plenty of special events over the course of the year that require a lot of volunteer support.

Events tabling, Special Events, Art Gallery openings, Open Houses, & others!

Tier 2: Specialized engagement

The Center has a lot of opportunities that require special skills or a discreet investment of time. Some of these are short-term, others are on-going. If you’d like to shape your experience by taking on a special project or would like to impact the Center in a strategic way, this is the spot for you! If you’re looking to contribute skills or resources in a way that you don’t see reflected here, please contact us directly or bring it up during your FIT contact.

Gaycoupage Craft Instructors: Have a knack for knitting? A way with watercolor? Bring your talent to our monthly crafts social and workshops, starting May 1 and every first Saturday from 1pm-3pm. We’re looking for people to do short workshop presentations at each social on a craft project. We’ll take care of the supplies, you bring the plan and the instructions. E-mail Celena at cmorrison@waygay.org for more information.

Cleaning Assistance: The Center is looking for a volunteer to clean the building on Mondays when our regular Housekeeping staff is off. Duties would include mopping, vacuuming, and trash removal. E-mail Avis at avis@waygay.org for more information.

Marketing support: Our marketing committee always needs graphic designers, poster-distribution, event photography and more. Our website team  (we use Squarespace, it’s super easy to access) can always use help updating events. E-mail Candice at cthompson@waygay.org for more information.

Tier 3: Regular shift

The Center wouldn't run without the volunteers who show up for a weekly shift or a monthly planning meeting. This is a great way to invest a set amount of time in the Center and meet other like-minded people. Some of these commitments may require an additional training or interview process.

Committees: Art Gallery committee

Library: With 14,000 volumes, our Library is one of the largest LGBTQ-centric collections in the world. Volunteer to help catalog and sort books, take a regular librarian shift or work on special projects. THE CENTER IS CURRENTLY LOOKING FOR A LIBRARY COORDINATOR. Click here to find out more.

Peer Counseling: Help counsel callers and walk-in clients on issues ranging from coming out and self-acceptance to addiction and family issues. A great way to help people who just need someone to listen.

Peer Counseling demands more volunteer hours than any other program at the William Way Community Center. Peer Counselors are expected to give at least a one-year volunteer commitment to the program. We counsel 5 nights a week (Mon – Fri) from 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM. You will be given a shift (a night) that is convenient for you. Once assigned a night, you will be expected to be available for your shift every week from 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM. This shift is once per week on the same night every week.

We have an interview process through which we evaluate potential new peer counselors. We then determine the maximum number of people we can bring on board, and invite that number of interviewees to our training. Interviews take place once a year in late summer. If you choose Peer Counseling you'll be added to our database and will receive further information and an interview in the summer.

Front Desk: The face of the Center! Front desk volunteers field phone calls and visitors and offering a welcoming attitude to the many people who make use of the Center's resources every day. Currently filling substitute and on-call positions.

Connecting Generations: This program matches LGBT seniors with younger volunteers for social support and friendship. Make a positive, life-long change in your life and the life of an LGBT senior. To learn more please contact the Center at 215-732-2220.
