Philly LGBTQ History Group: Tara Burk on LGBTQ Art in America

Sunday, May 20, 2018: 12:00pm-2:00pm

The Philly LGBTQ History Group will resume meeting this month after having April off. Our featured speaker will be Tara Burk, an art historian who specializes in the visual culture of gender, sexuality, and race in the United States. She teaches at Rutgers University and Temple University. Her talk, which she'll also be giving next month at the Dallas Museum of Art, is titled "Born in Flames: LGBTQ Art in America."

"How have artists used their work to express, explore, and represent sexual identity? In this presentation, Tara Burk will provide a chronological overview of LGBTQ art history in America that will enrich conventional understandings of modern and contemporary art. Audiences will gain a basic knowledge of LGBTQ art - including major (and minor) artists and artworks as well as key themes and strategies. Since the history of LGBTQ art is inextricably connected to the history of LGBTQ social justice, this presentation will focus on the revolutionary potential of LGBTQ art."
