LGBTQ Legacies: Art, Archives, Analysis

May 10- August 30
Opening Reception: Friday, May 10, 2019: 6-8 pm

For his Archive series, Gabriel Martinez re-photographed 1970s and 80s-era images of LGBTQ+ life in Philadelphia by Harry R. Eberlin within the context of the John J. Wilcox, Jr. Archives. Eberlin was the first staff photographer for the Philadelphia Gay News and documented queer communities in Philly and surrounding areas. In this exhibit, Martinez's mixed-media prints are reunited with the source images to trouble diversity and critically examine representation in queer archives. This project, which is organized in collaboration with Martinez, Michael Carroll and John Anderies, Director of the Wilcox Archives, seeks to shed light on robust yet problematic aspects of depictions of our regional histories.
